Joanne is committed to working with the people of Westminster North in order to make their constituency a safer and better place to live. She has engaged in a process of consultation throughout the area so that she may highlight the concerns of local residents over levels of crime in their neighbourhoods. Here in Westminster North the crime rate remains unacceptably high; the number of drugs-related offences rose by over 13% between August ‘06 and August ‘07 and there were more than 14,000 recorded instances of theft and handling during this period.

Explaining the necessity for her crime initiative Joanne said: ‘Since 1997 violent crime in the UK has doubled and inner city areas such as Westminster North have been particularly badly affected. I am launching my Safer Neighbourhoods campaign to engage and work with local people in order to develop solutions that will effectively tackle the crime blighting so many lives, young and old, rich and poor across Westminster North.’

Responding to widespread anxiety amongst local residents Joanne has taken the second phase of her campaign to Church Street, where violent crime has risen by 12% in the last year. A resident of the Lisson Green estate welcomed Joanne’s emphasis on tackling crime in the area: 'Car crime, drug taking and anti-social behaviour are a real problem and a constant worry for people living on the estate. This campaign to increase the police presence around the clock and work with residents to reduce antisocial behaviour deserves everyone's support.'
